Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the maximum weight you can be on a kayak?

110kgs / 17 stone / 240lbs

2. What is the maximum height?

The maximum height is 2 metres.

3. Can I watch my friend/child whilst they kayak?

Yes, you can walk along the towpath next to the river to watch during the tour.

4. Do you hire out the kayak equipment for trips (outside the tour format) and what is required in terms of licenses for a tour?

Our insurance does not allow us to hire out kayaks which is why all the tours are accompanied by a qualified instructor. We cannot allow customers who have their own kayaks to bring theirs as this is not covered under our Insurance. All craft on the non tidal Thames need to be licensed with the Environmental Agency or via the British Canoe Union. On the tidal Thames they need to be inspected by the Port of London Authority. All our craft /kayaks have been inspected and have passed these requirements. We have an annual inspection on all our kayaks from these Authorities.

5. Can I still kayak if I cannot swim?

No, we recommend that you can swim a minimum of 10 metres.

6. Do I need to be able to roll out of a kayak?

No. The aim of the tours is that inexperienced kayakers can enjoy the tour without the need to have any previous kayaking skills. Our qualified instructor will guide you throughout the experience.

7. Is kayaking dangerous?

No, but you must follow the guidance given by the Instructor. As a company, we provide fully qualified Instructors who have expert knowledge of the waterways. Safety induction prior to commencing your tour is provided. All the necessary safety equipment is given, including buoyancy aids.

8. Do you provide ‘life jackets’?

Buoyancy aids (life jackets) are provided, and it is obligatory that they are worn always throughout your tour.

9. How fit do I need to be?

You must be able to endure moderate exercise for the duration of your tour, can swim 10 metres and have a reasonable level of balance.

10. What is the difference between a kayak and a canoe?

A kayak is where the person is enclosed in a small space often using a spray skirt and a canoe is open enabling one or two people to paddle, not enclosed. We only provide spray skirts to experience kayakers if they are requested as otherwise these can be dangerous for novices.

11. Do I have to wear a wet suit?

No, a wetsuit is not required but if you prefer to wear one that is fine.

12. What if it rains on the day of the tour?

If it is only light rain the tour will go ahead but if it is heavy rain, thunder and lightning or very high winds tours will not go ahead and alternative arrangement will be made by the Company.

If the river level is too high and the river is on Red Boards, we cannot kayak. We will email you in advance of your tour if the weather looks likely to affect us, so please check your emails. We will send you a rebooking code valid for 6 months to use at your convenience to enter in the promotion code section of our website.
